THE HISTORY OF THE GARDEN

At present, the Fitzwilliam Square Association holds a 150 year lease of the Garden with a peppercorn rent of 5p per annum (from the Earl of Pembroke) per year on the condition that it remains a private garden.

The square was built by Richard Fitzwilliam, 7th Viscount Fitzwilliam. It was designed in 1789 and laid out in 1792. Fitzwilliam Square is the smallest of the five Georgian squares to be built in the city, thus the Garden is the smallest of the Gardens within the Georgian squares.

The Garden was enclosed in 1813 through an act of Parliament of Ireland and the park remains very much in the same layout from that time. The historical integrity and preservation of the Garden is the heart of the Fitzwilliam Square Association and we take great pride in lovingly preserving its layout as well as planting for generations of members to come.

We hope to utilise this space as a place for resources to be shared by historians, local enthusiasts, scholars and writers alike.

Please check back in periodically as more is added as we add historical photos and sources
